Cruz: Debt ceiling is the best leverage

Texas Senator Ted Cruz (R) said Sunday that while he doesn’t believe the United States will default on its debt come October 17th, the looming deadline does give Republicans an opportunity to negotiate with the president on ObamaCare.

In an exclusive interview with Candy Crowley on State of the Union, Cruz said that, historically, raising the debt ceiling has been used as leverage in dealings with presidents, a tactic he believes his party will – and should – use again.

“We should look for three things,” he said.  “Number one, we should look for some significant structural plan and reduce government spending. Number two, we should avoid new taxes. And number, we should look for ways to mitigate the harms from Obamacare.”

WH budget chief says no new revenue

White House economic adviser Gene Sperling says any deal to raise the debt ceiling will not bring in new revenue. "Nobody is talking about raising any revenues over the next year and a half. [Obama] has been pushing very hard to cut taxes with the payroll tax cut extension for next year."

Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer sounded optimistic Sunday morning about a deal that would avert a fiscal crisis. "If there's a word that would right here that would sum up the mood, it would be relief. ... there is no final agreement... but default is far less of a possibility now than it was even a day ago."
